A 55-year-old former naval officer has been arrested on charges of practicing medicine for 20 years without a medical license.

The suspect identified as Thanaboon was arrested at a clinic on Phetchaburi Soi 31 in Ratchathewi District, Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, the Metropolitan Police Bureau said as reported by Reuters. Bangkok PostSaturday.

The arrests followed a complaint from a local resident about a group of ‘fake doctors’ providing abortion services at clinics on Phetchaburi Road.

When police visited the clinic, they found Thanaboon about to give an injection to a patient, assisted by a nurse from Myanmar. He claimed to have a medical license, but officers could not find his information in the Medical Council of Thailand’s online database.

Thanaboon eventually admitted that he had been practicing without a license since 2004. He had operated a clinic on Phetchaburi Soi 31 for more than 10 years.

The patient’s room on the upper floor of the clinic was found in poor condition. In addition, several images of pelvic ultrasounds and patients who gave birth at the clinic were found on his mobile phone.

Thanaboon said she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and midwifery in 1989 before becoming an officer in the navy medical corps stationed at a hospital in Sattahip District, Chon Buri.

He said he wanted to supplement his income so he started working part-time as an unlicensed doctor at a medical clinic in 2004.

Thanaboon was arrested once in 2009 for providing illegal abortion services. However, she was later released on bail and managed to avoid further action on the matter until the case was over.

He later left the navy. Thanaboon admitted that for the past 20 years, he had provided unlicensed medical services at various clinics relying only on the knowledge he gained while studying nursing. (B-3)
