In addition to the redevelopment of rond-point Montgomery, it was “the” major mobility project planned for these Carnival holidays in Brussels. But backpedaling: rue Belliard will not ultimately go to three lanes. The planned lane reduction test has been cancelled, we learned on Monday morning.
“It is a co-decision of the City of Brussels and the Region. We have found that this is not the right time to do it”indicates the spokesperson for the mayor Philippe Close (PS), thus confirming information initially broadcast by RTBF.
Among the reasons given by the City of Brussels: the consequences of the Pentagon’s new traffic plan, the work planned on Place du Trône and the multiple European summits linked to the war in Ukraine. Events which, according to the municipal authorities, will already cause an increase in traffic congestion.
On the side of the City, we evoke a “cancelation” of the test, not a postponement, and we refuse to give a new date. “But the three stripes remain the objective”, specifies the mayor’s office. An ambition also maintained at the level of the Brussels Ministry of Mobility, for which the reduction remains “the long-term goal“for this nerve center of the capital. But will we have to wait months, or even years, before having a rue Belliard with three stripes? No agenda has been communicated for the moment.
