A trust ceremony for the soldiers who returned from the mission in Mali will be held in Vilnius

As reported by the Ministry of National Defense (KAM), this is the last group of soldiers who took part in the mission in the eastern part of Mali, in the province of Gao. Lithuanian soldiers participated in it as part of the German contingent, which is also ending its participation in the international operation.

The returning soldiers will be greeted by Deputy Minister of National Defense Greta Monika Tučkutė, Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Valdemaras Rupšys, Commander of the German Operations Headquarters Bernd Schütt, Chief of the Defense Staff Mindaugas Steponavičius, Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Colonel Darius Vaicikauskas, commanders of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, relatives of soldiers and other guests.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the first shift platoon of the Force Protection Unit, formed on the basis of soldiers of the National Defense Volunteer Forces, started serving in this operation as part of the German contingent in October 2017.

Over six years, MINUSMA has deployed more than 500 troops who have rotated every six months, gained international experience, trained and conducted real force protection operations in the area.

The United Nations operation MINUSMA has been running in Mali since 2013. It aims to stabilize the situation in Mali, support the implementation of the transitional action plan, protect the civilian population, promote and defend human rights, organize the provision of humanitarian aid, preserve cultural heritage and help ensure justice at the national and international levels.
