A tragic run-over accident occurred today in the Turkish province of Mardin, killing at least 16 pedestrians in the southeast of the country.
On Saturday, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter: “16 people were killed and 29 others were injured, including 8 in critical condition, in an accident that occurred following the brakes of a truck that ran over a crowd in Derik, Mardin Province, failed.
The pioneers of “Twitter” circulated a video clip, showing a truck out of control, running over a crowd of pedestrians and colliding with a number of cars, amid loud screams from the horror of the tragedy.
Initial investigations revealed that the accident was caused by the truck’s brake failure, and the accident started with two cars colliding, from which it entered a cafe, where dozens were sitting until it overturned, while another truck loaded with fertilizer ran over people who tried to treat the wounded.
The accident occurred at approximately 17:00 local time next to a gas station, while the concerned authorities sent ambulance teams, police and firefighters to the site of the accident as soon as they were notified.
Ambulances took the wounded to nearby hospitals, and the bodies of those who lost their lives were taken to the morgue.
