Romina fuses the pipes for the water installation in the new hairdressing classroom. Hours before, the classmates from the gas course cleaned the heaters. Thanks to effort of the students, the Don Bosco Alumni Center where different trades are taught is sustained and expands into Rock.

Last May 26 marked the 42nd anniversary of the work that Father Smith began. Before inaugurating the Don Bosco center located on 2850 Kennedy street, the religious founded the Ceferino Namuncurá center in 1969 on Santa Cruz and San Luis streets, which is now the church.

“After the church, the father began to build classrooms and give training courses, I started there in 1969,” said the director of the trade school, Luis Singh.

The director who took office in 2023 and previously worked as an electricity professor, pointed out that there was an agreement with the municipality in those years and land was ceded in the northern area of Roca for the new center that today is located on Keneddy street.
On that side of the city, where there were almost no houses, Father Smith began planning a college to offer trades to people.

The religious was from Bahía Blanca and in that city at that time a prestigious carpenter had died and there was no one left to work that carpentry.
The family sold and also donated the machinery with which the father began to equip the new hall that had been built.
“Then the shed was made and the classrooms that are inside such as electricity, mechanics and plumbing, ”said director Singh.

Today 16 workshops are given and there is also a first one for adults where support is offered to students.
Only in March of this year, 327 new students entered. Every year when enrollment begins, the lines go around the block and more than 1,000 people show up needing to learn a skilled job.
This is why from the center they insist on expand capacity and offer better quality training.

On May 26, two new classrooms were inaugurated for some workshops that, due to space issues, continued to be offered at the Ceferino Namuncurá center.
It was the same students who installed the artifacts in these rooms. “The center is sustained mainly by the efforts of the students,” said Principal Singh proudly.

However, since the funds they receive from the State and what they collect in student fees are not enough for these works, from the school They are holding a raffle to raise money for the materials.

“With the help of the students we will also be able to realize the dream of make a large classroom and build a barbecue area so that they have a space to share some food, a day of coexistence”, anticipated Singh.

He The center has also suffered several robberies, so another of the projects is to put up some security cameras, to try to protect the vehicles of the students and build a house for a doorman, because “if there are no people permanently, everything is stolen,” he lamented.
“There is effort and commitment, but we need more resources to continue advancing,” remarked the director.
