A recycled steel torch for the Paris 2024 Olympics

From May 8 to July 26, 2024, before the start of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, 11,000 volunteers will transport the Olympic flame between Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) and Paris, using a recycled steel torch. The object designed by the French designer Mathieu Lehanneur is produced by ArcelorMittal in 2,000 copies. The torches will be manufactured at three group sites: Châteauneuf (Loire) for the production of steel from recovered materials, Florange (Moselle) for rolling and Woippy (Moselle) for cutting sheet metal into blanks, which will be fit afterwards.

New foldable smartphones for Samsung

Samsung unveiled its next generation of foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, on July 26. This is its 5th generation since the 2019 launch of the world’s first foldable smartphone. The boss of the “mobile” division, Roh Tae-moon, promises lighter, thinner and more ergonomic products, sporting larger and brighter screens than existing products, for marketing which will begin on August 11. Foldable smartphones remain a niche market for the moment, from which Apple is still – for a short time – the conspicuous absentee.

The first A330 MRTT will be delivered to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 2027.

A giant electric crane on the RER site in Essonne

A 4,544-tonne electric crane went into action on July 19 and 20 in Massy (Essonne) to remove two railway bridges used by the RER B and RER C lines: the Gallardon bridge (used by the RER C) and that of Chartres (RER B). The aim of the maneuver is to replace the current bridges, each weighing 460 tonnes, with structures weighing 950 tonnes and 1,375 tonnes respectively. The new bridges will be laid on August 8 and 9, 2023. This crane called “Little Celeste”, leased to the Belgian Sarens, was erected between April and June 2023 using two auxiliary cranes and will be dismantled from September.
