The incredible story behind the famous black vampire cape that Béla Lugosi wore in “Dracula”
In dialogue with the local media Nadmorski21.pl, the archaeologist in charge of the excavation, Maciej Stromski, confirmed the finding: “We discovered examples of beliefs in the dead returning from the grave, which might only be stopped by beheading.” Likewise, the “example of a woman following a beheading” was found, in which the skull of a child was placed on her chest, and there were loose bones in three ossuaries.
Added to this, the archaeologist explained that regarding 30% of the remains had bricks on the side of his head, arms and legsas well as that one of the coins dated from 1846. “It was believed that if a member of the family of the deceased died shortly following the funeral, he or she might be a vampire. Therefore, following the burial, the grave was dug and the head of the deceased was cut off, which was then placed on his legs,” Stromski explained regarding the ritual.
According to the British media First Newsthe church located near the discovery It was built at the beginning of the 18th century and it was enlarged following 1945. At some point, its old graves were liquidated and large quantities of bones were deposited in ossuaries.
Previous discovery and the “anti-vampire” ritual
The discovery in Luzino is not the first finding of “vampire” graves in Poland. In this sense, in September 2022 they found the body of a “vampire woman” in the town of Pien.
During archaeological work in a 17th century cemetery, the group discovered the remains of a woman who she had been pinned to the ground with a sickle to her throat. Added to this, he had a closed lock on the ball of his left foot. Both interventions were carried out to “prevent him from coming back from the dead.”
Said rituals once morest the undead date back to the 11th century in Central Europe. Back then, people feared that some of the bodies that were buried would make their way back to the surface as vampires and terrorize the living.
Given this concern, individuals resorted to various rituals to remove the “vampire curse”. For that reason, it is not uncommon to find burial sites in the region where bodies have a metal bar or stake hammered into their skulls.
