Square Enix continues to fail in the game business

This week’s most popular topic was related to the major game company “Square Enix”, known for blockbuster series such as “Final Fantasy” and “Dragon Quest”.

In 2022, “Square Enix” has released a number of notable titles, but many titles have been branded as failures. The beginning of that nightmare was Nintendo Switch software “Chocobo GP” released on March 10th.

This work is a racing game featuring the mascot character Chocobo of the “FF” series. It is the successor to Chocobo Racing ~Road to the Illusionary World~, which was released in 1993, and it also features online battles, and was highly anticipated.

However, fatal bugs occurred one following another in the online element. Only some players were able to start with flying, and even though the race was originally three laps, the goal was reached in two laps, and the race was no longer established.

It seems that bug fixes are progressing now, but it’s hard to say that the image from gamers has recovered.

In addition, the new work that “Square Enix” was particularly focused on also came to a tragic end. “BABYLON’S FALL” released on March 3 is an action RPG co-produced by the company with “Platinum Games”. It is a title that has attracted a lot of attention overseas as it is a new title from the two companies that teamed up for the world-famous hit “NieR Automata”.

However, the number of players has not increased at all since its release, and the evaluation of the game itself is poor. As a result, the end of service on February 28, 2023 will be announced.

Moreover, even though it was a full-price game with a list price of regarding 8,500 yen, it became a hot topic in a bad way because following the service ended, you might not play the game at all.

Action RPG “Valkyrie Elysion” released on September 29th is the latest work of the cult popular “Valkyrie Profile”. However, when the trial version was released, users complained regarding the performance.

It was hoped that the product version would improve the quality, but unfortunately it seems that it did not. According to the evaluation and metascore by the major game site “metacritic”, the result is an indescribable 66 points.

In addition, even titles that have not been officially released yet will be looked at with anxiety. The title is the simulation RPG “HARVESTELLA” scheduled to be released on November 4th. The trial version was released on September 14th, but the “long loading time” that makes it hard to believe that it is a Reiwa game has become a hot topic. This, too, has been criticized.

Whether that voice has arrived, the development staff reveals in media interviews that they are considering improving the loading time.

“Square Enix” has been in trouble this year, but will 2023 be a year of redemption?

Next, we will talk regarding the “Persona” series, which has become a huge hit worldwide and has become Atlus’ signature content.
