Manchester United took all three points in the Premier League following beating Burnley thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ stunning volley goal.
Manchester United’s players were active in the attack from the beginning of the game, and Jonny Evans almost received a dream gift to commemorate his 200th appearance for Manchester United, but the goal was canceled by VAR.
However, Manchester United did not give in to bad luck and Northern Ireland defender Evans reappeared and assisted Bruno Fernandes’ goal with a cross-field pass that broke through the Burnley defense. Captain Fernandez scored the winning goal with a perfect volley.
Hannibal, who played his first full-time game as a Manchester United player, showed liveliness in both offense and defense throughout the game.
It was a hard-won victory. Burnley also played well, but ultimately might not break through Manchester United’s strong defense.
First half – Manchester United undaunted by VAR cancellation
Manchester United pressed hard from the beginning of the game and tried not to give Burnley the ball. In the first minute of the first half, Marcus Rashford received a pass from Hannibal and took the opportunity, but it hit the side net.
Despite Manchester United’s early pressure, the discharge continued until midway through the first half. Luca Koleosho’s quick penetration down the left flank and Diogo Dalot’s late challenge resulted in an early yellow card. Moments later, Burnley created the best opportunity of the first half with a sustained attack. Josh Cullen broke through the defense and slotted in at the feet of Zeki Amduni from just outside the six-yard box. Amduni beat Andre Onana with a shot, but it hit the post.
In a situation where the flow of the game was unfavorable, Bruno Fernandez received a corner kick. Evans appeared to have scored in his 200th appearance for Manchester United with a header inside the box, but a VAR review ruled that Rasmus Hoilun had been offside, obstructing Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford’s vision.
Evans made amends just before the end of the first half by floating the ball between Burnley defenders and connecting it perfectly to Fernandes’ right foot. Captain Bruno fired a powerful volley past the Trafford goalkeeper. United were able to take the lead before half-time at Turf Moor.
Second Half – Focus until the end
In the second half, neither team was able to attack consistently and showed a markedly different performance. This pattern was only broken when Diogo Dalot’s exquisite cross went just wide of Hoilun’s outstretched leg. If this shot had been successful, the lead might have been doubled.
Manchester United had some good opportunities in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but no goals were scored in the second half.
With 15 minutes left in regular time, coach Vincent Kompany ordered a third substitution. It felt like United needed a second goal to take all three points away at Turf Moor.
Hannibal once once more sent a through ball to Rashford, but was blocked by the Burnley defense and might not shoot.
The final scene of the game was Burnley’s attack. A dangerous free kick was attempted from the right side of the penalty box, but goalkeeper Onana made a save.
