The United Nations announced on Tuesday that around 9,600 people have been displaced in western Myanmar since Monday, following fresh clashes between the army and the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA). .

“The escalation of tensions between the Burmese Armed Forces and ARSA in Rakhine and Chin States since last June has led to frequent armed clashes in which heavy weapons have been used,” said Stéphane Dujarric. , spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, at a press conference.

He said that “the conflict between the two parties has resumed following a temporary ceasefire, in force since November 2020”.

“On September 5, around 9,600 people fled their homes as a result of these clashes, bringing the total number of displaced people to around 84,000,” he added.

The UN official stressed that “main roads and waterways have been closed, which has blocked the movement of civilians and prevented the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need”.
