It starts like a movie show. The title of the black and white film is already flickering on the screen: “1000 Eyes”. But what seems like a nice allusion to the history of the Vienna Schauspielhaus as a “home cinema” is the beginning of a theater performance for which director Sahar Rahimi had 1,000 ideas. Too many. “I still don’t check anything,” a Disney dwarf soon says. That won’t change significantly for two hours.
At the end there is another film, the 1958 horror film “The Blob” regarding a man-eating slime mold, and the sentence: “The film’s trailer ends with the sentence: ‘Terror has no shape.'” The director and performance artist born in Tehran in 1981 Rahimi, of course, takes the opposite approach: she adds a variety of films to the story of the Kurdish film student Asma, who wants to make her graduation film in Paris regarding the murder of Kurdish resistance fighters Sakine Cansiz, Fidan Doğan and Leyla Söylemez in January 2013 and suddenly disappears. and cartoon characters added.
This can only be understood by reading her conceptual notes in the program sheet: Because the Kurdish family story that the piece tells “touches me and makes me empathetic,” she drew on “figures from my pop culture background with whom I felt empathy “, remind. So Frankenstein plays Asma’s mother, four of the seven Disney dwarves explain what the PKK is, which is classified as a terrorist organization, cowboy Woody from “Toy Story” plays Asma’s film professor and cartoon animals sell snacks to the visitors during the “intermission” of the film. Very colorful, very confusing.
The author and dramaturg Mazlum Nergiz, born in Diyarbakır (Turkey) in 1991 and a member of the theater’s new management team since the beginning of the season, wrote “1000 Eyes” in 2021 for the Franco-Argentine theater company El Vaïvén and the Paris directing festival “Prix T13”. The Viennese production, in which part of the audience also has to switch sides, moves the political background of the piece, in which the French composer Jacques Besse also plays an unclear supporting role, very far away – which is a shame, among other things, because the Viennese too The Kurdish murders of 1989 and the shameful role of the Vienna government are discussed. “In my practice I reflect on the experience of absence,” explains the director. Daisy Duck and Minnie Mouse were present. They didn’t look like they knew what they’d been hired to do.
