To anticipate spending on end-of-year gifts, a third of French people plan to use split payment. A way of spreading costs, often without fees. But watch out for certain pitfalls.
The end of year holidays are quickly approaching, and with inflation, many French people are hoping to find solutions to please without breaking the bank. To anticipate expenses, nearly a third of them plan to pay for their gifts in several installments with split payment. Europe 1 went to a store where, to pass the bill more easily, payment in four installments without fees is displayed everywhere.
“Over five months, we have around fifty payment files in several installments, which brings us new customers,” explains Thomas, the store director. “It also takes the complexity out of more expensive products a little. It’s really to help everyone.”
Beware of possible fees
Welcome help for Garance, especially at the moment. “For busy periods like Christmas, it can be useful to spread out your expenses.” Like her, nearly one in two of those under 35 are considering using split payment for Christmas. For Jordy, using it, yes, but not every time. “If it’s a small product, I don’t think so. But if it’s a product worth several hundred euros, I would think regarding it,” he admits.
But be careful, this advantage can turn into a trap: if split payment is most often free, the costs in the event of an incident very quickly climb beyond 10%. A European directive should soon require an examination of the financial situation of customers to avoid the risk of over-indebtedness.
