According to the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Volgograd Region, an acetylene leak might have led to the tragedy – two cylinders were found in an exploded car.
As V1.RU was informed in the Moscow LLC Tekhgaz, acetylene is used mainly in autogenous welding and cutting of metals. Technical acetylene has a pungent odor that ensures safe operation and storage.
– The use of acetylene in everyday life and industry requires strict adherence to certain measures – the gas is toxic to living organisms, it is explosive both in its pure form and mixed with atmospheric air, – emphasizes Tekhgaz.
Bottled acetylene is a reliable form of storage. But it is important to monitor the integrity of the packaging, make sure there is no rust. The balloon is not disposable – it twists.
— The design of the cylinder itself practically does not differ from tanks for other technical gases — the tanks are also made of seamless steel pipes. Acetylene cylinders are equipped with a special valve, the branch pipe in which is made without thread, and the hoses are fixed to the clamps, the company explained. – A feature of acetylene cylinders is the internal filling of bulk coal or porous silicate mass. The mass of the filler impregnated with acetone occupies regarding a third of the cylinder and is necessary to ensure the explosion safety of acetylene. The filler prevents the possibility of backfire and prevents spontaneous decomposition of acetylene.
