Last week, a group of enthusiastic bicolano students embarked on a captivating journey into the heart of Japan, thanks to the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines. Partnering with organizations like Sorsogon State University, Bicol University, Cabangan High School, and prominent shopping destinations like SM City Legazpi and SM Supermalls, the Japan Details and Culture Center (JICC) took their “Hello! Japan” program to the Bicol region, creating a vibrant tapestry of cultural exchange and understanding.

“Japanese and Filipino cultures, as distinct from each other as they are, share many commonalities. These connections must be nurtured and showcased to the next generation of Filipinos—they are the future of our two nations and of this part of the world,” emphasized Yurie Mukaigawa,JICC’s cultural officer,during the program’s insightful sessions.

The “Hello! Japan” experience was a whirlwind of cultural immersion. Students learned basic Japanese phrases,donned conventional attire like kimonos,Happi coats,and yukata,and engaged in lively discussions about Japan’s rich traditions,distinct seasons,technological advancements,captivating pop culture,delicious cuisine,and dynamic sports scene.

Adding to the excitement,a captivating performance by Japanese singer FuMi enchanted the students.The students reciprocated with a lively performance of Pantomina, a traditional Bicol dance, creating a lovely exchange of artistry and expression between the two cultures.

Japanese government scholarship programs where also presented as valuable pathways for aspiring young minds. Interested students received valuable data and guidance on how to apply, opening doors to enriching academic experiences in Japan.

“What inspired the ‘Hello! Japan’ program, and what are its primary objectives?”

Yurie Mukaigawa: “We at the Japan Details and Culture Center believe in fostering meaningful connections between countries and cultures. We noticed a growing interest in Japan among Filipinos, notably in the Bicol region. ‘Hello! Japan’ was created to provide a platform for cultural exchange, showcasing Japanese traditions, opportunities for academic collaboration, and ultimately bridging cultural gaps between our two vibrant societies.”

“I saw that the program featured traditional Japanese attire, performances, and even discussions on modern Japanese pop culture. How did you curate such a diverse range of experiences?”

Yurie Mukaigawa: “We wanted to offer a holistic glimpse into Japanese culture, encompassing both its rich traditions and contemporary aspects. The kimonos, Happi coats, and yukata allowed students to step into a different world, and FuMi’s performance provided a taste of modern Japanese music. We also discussed the advancements in technology, films, and anime, showcasing how Japan is a dynamic nation constantly evolving while respecting its heritage.”

“The program also touched upon Japanese scholarship opportunities for Filipino students. What impact do you hope these programs will have?”

Yurie mukaigawa: ” Educational exchange is a powerful tool for building bridges and fostering understanding. By offering data about Japanese government scholarships, we hope to inspire young Filipinos to explore opportunities for studying and researching in Japan. This can lead to personal growth, academic advancement, and, ultimately, stronger ties between our nations.”
