a tab for audio and video calls

To highlight the audio and video possibilities of its (Facebook) Messenger application, Meta adds a Calls tab that serves as a call log. Convenient to see all conversations and reach a correspondent.

It’s been a while now Messenger is much more than a simple instant messenger used to exchange text messages. In fact, such as WhatsApp, Skype, Signal, Discord or Viber, the Facebook application – formerly integrated into the social network, but which has been autonomous for years – allows you to make audio and/or video calls to your contacts. A particularly practical and popular function, but which some are unaware of the existence. A situation that should change with a novelty discovered by Digital Trendswhich Meta – the company that owns Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram – is starting to roll out: the mobile application, for Android and iOS, has a Calls tab. As in a telephony application, this section acts as a call log by listing all audio and video communications in chronological order. You can easily find a communication and call a correspondent, without having to rummage through options and menus.

Messenger’s Calls tab: a real call log, like on a phone

A visual of the function has been revealed and shows the various information displayed in the Calls tab, at the very bottom of the application. For each call, Facebook Messenger displays the profile picture of the recently contacted person, with a small green bubble at the bottom right if they are online. The first and last name are displayed next to it, and below the means of communication – audio or video. You can also see if the call is incoming or outgoing, as well as the time and day it was made. Finally, a button on the far right allows you to relaunch the call. At the very top right, there are two buttons, one with a phone and another with a camera, which allow you to quickly launch a call by then choosing from your contact list. The function is currently being deployed in the application, it will probably be necessary to wait a little before seeing the Calls tab arrive on Facebook Messenger.

This update is part of the will of Meta to make Messenger an application in its own right and to highlight the possibilities offered by Messenger in terms of calls, especially for those who are not yet aware of this communication option. The group explains that audio and video calls have grown in popularity on the platform, with a 40% increase compared to the start of 2020. In total, around 300 million audio and video calls are made every day on the platform. Messenger.

let’s remember that Facebook removed messaging from the main Facebook app in 2014 in order to push mobile users to download another one – namely Facebook Messenger – to continue using the service. Video calling came next in 2015, followed by inter-app messaging with Instagram (bought by the group in 2012). More recently, it’s added new shortcuts and other features aimed at bringing Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsAppacquired in 2014.
