The Delhaize supermarket chain has just presented a surprising pilot project this Tuesday. In fact, the brand now wants to use… larvae to treat surplus food.

The goal here would be to use larvae to feed on unsold fruits and vegetables and then serve as a meal to supplement the diet of other animals, explains Delhaize in a press release.

While the idea may seem surprising, the goal behind it is quite noble. Indeed, the fight once morest food waste as well as reductions in CO2 emissions are at the heart of the project. “The larvae, transformed into animal food, constitute a perfect alternative to commonly used soy, which often leaves a significant ecological footprint“, explains Delhaize.

The final objective is to transform around 20 tonnes of surplus food per month into 3 tonnes of larvae.
