A surprise strike called at the Casino de Montréal

Faced with the impasse for the renewal of their collective agreement, the croupiers of the Casino de Montreal decided to launch a four-hour surprise strike on Saturday, by demonstrating directly in front of their workplace.

The demonstration began at 4 p.m. to try to advance the negotiations, which are blocked on monetary issues, schedules and the organization of work.

“It is only a first step in an escalation of pressure tactics if the employer does not show more openness during the mediation sessions which will take place from next Tuesday. With today’s action, the dealers are demonstrating their mobilization and their determination to reach a satisfactory agreement,” said Jean-Pierre Proulx, union representative for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

For its part, the employer Loto-Québec assured that customers are welcomed according to the usual schedule, despite the strike. The poker room will however be closed, while blackjack, roulette and baccarat are still offered.

“Loto-Québec wishes to continue the negotiations undertaken with the union according to parameters that are similar to what was accepted by the same employment groups in its other casinos. She remains available for the resumption of exchanges with the union, ”he said.

Remember that the collective agreement of 521 croupiers expired on March 31, 2020.
