The Pure Source Surf School and the Chateau Caradoc Clinica private institution specializing in psychiatric care, will set up, in Biarritz, an Adapted Physical Activity workshop of “Surf Therapy” from June 2023.

Pure Source is the first surf school certified by the National Surf Health Association.

Chaired by Mr. Jean Marc SAINT GEOURS, it aims to fight once morest physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle. It thus promotes a longer life expectancy in good health thanks to the use of surfing and its associated disciplines as non-drug therapy for people with chronic pathologies.

The director of the Pure Source surf school, Mr. Nicolas PINOT, former member of the French surfing team and member of the scientific committee of the national Surf Health association, will therefore oversee this activity alongside Mr. Ludovic BETTON , Teacher in Adapted Physical Activity at the Château Caradoc Clinic and Mrs Ainhoa ORDOÑEZ, State Registered Nurse at the Château CARADOC Clinic.

This activity will be intended for adult patients with a mental disorder and cared for in the Day Hospital of the Clinique Château CARADOC. Thanks to the loan of equipment provided by Surf Santé and the Hastea Surf School, various disciplines such as Surfing, Body Surfing, Stand Up Paddle, Aquatic Rescue, Hawaiian Outrigger canoe… will be offered throughout the 10 sessions. They will take place on the Côte des Basques beach (City of Biarritz) or on the Nive river (City of Bayonne). The physical and psychological benefits of these activities will allow patients to integrate into a Psychosocial Rehabilitation perspective.

What is Psychosocial Rehabilitation through Surf Therapy?

It is to engage in a process aimed at enhancing the patient’s skills, taking into account their limits but without focusing on them. It also means mobilizing all the resources present in one’s environment, promoting functional remission, restoring self-esteem and fighting once morest self-stigma.

Adapted Physical Activity, a complementary tool to medical management, has been able to show its favorable impact in the management of depressive relapses and anxiety disorders, in mood disorders, as well as in maintaining abstinence in connection with addictions through numerous studies. It is on the basis of this data that the healthcare team of Dr François CHEVRIER, Medical Director and Psychiatrist of the Clinique Château CARADOC, offers a surf therapy activity throughout the year allowing patients, beyond direct benefits in terms of health, to reinvest the natural spaces of the Basque-Navarre coast territory.

The objective is, on the one hand to support these patients towards empowerment in their practice, and on the other hand to sustain these activities in order to welcome new patients throughout the year.
