A violent assault that occurred on Monday in the Montreal metro will be the subject of a police investigation. The incident went viral online, and Montreal Mayor, Valérie Plante called it “terrible” during a city council meeting on Tuesday. She also reassured citizens concerning their safety. The Mayor explained that her administration, and new police chief Fady Dagher, are working hard to combat insecurity. She said, “We take action and make progress, we do not work in silos.” A video was released online showing an individual brutally attacking another passenger with punches in a Green Line subway car near the Beaudry station around 2:40 pm on Monday. The victim was a 45-year-old male who sustained physical injuries, including a sprained ankle. The police have requested for the subway’s surveillance footage to identify the suspect. As of now, there have been no arrests, and the suspect remains at large. Montreal’s transport authority, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has pledged to collaborate with the police during the investigation.

La mairesse a notamment affirmé que son administration et le nouveau chef de police Fady Dagher « travaillent très fort » pour lutter contre l’insécurité. « Nous, on agit, on pose des gestes », a-t-elle dit. « On a une vision globale, on ne travaille pas en silo. »
Mme Plante était questionnée par le chef de l’opposition Aref Salem concernant une vidéo diffusée lundi sur les réseaux sociaux. Elle montre un individu en attaquer brutalement un autre à coups de poing dans un wagon de métro de la ligne verte. La scène s’est produite en après-midi non loin de la station Beaudry, aux alentours de 14 h 40, a indiqué mardi l’agent Jean-Pierre Brabant, porte-parole de la police de Montréal.
Dans la vidéo diffusée en ligne, on aperçoit un individu glisser quelques mots à sa victime, avant de frapper celle-ci à la tête et de lui asséner plusieurs coups de poing. « Faites de quoi ! », lance alors l’homme en détresse aux autres passagers. L’agresseur finit par s’éloigner, laissant sa victime au sol. Celle-ci semble d’ailleurs s’être blessée à la cheville lors de l’alteraction.
La victime est un homme de 45 ans. « Durant l’altercaction, la victime a subi des voies de fait et des blessures, dont une blessure à la cheville. Il y a un rapport qui a été envoyé aux enquêteurs. On a fait la demande pour retirer les caméras de surveillance du métro et pouvoir identifier le suspect. À date, il n’y a pas d’arrestation, mais on recherche un homme dans la vingtaine », a précisé M. Brabant.
« Aujourd’hui, j’ai peur »
« Moi, comme Montréalais, aujourd’hui, j’ai peur », a dit M. Salem en réaction à ces images. « Pour les gens qui prennent le transport en commun, pour ma fille qui commence à prendre l’autobus, j’ai peur. […] There are subway stations that look like shooting galleries. »
“We will wish a good recovery to this citizen who was attacked and obviously it is terrible, reacted Mayor Plante. This is not what we want in any way in the metro system or on our streets. »
“The images are blood-curdling. I have enormous empathy for the man who was assaulted in such a despicable way. I hope he will recover quickly, without trauma, continued Aref Salem. I can’t imagine this might happen to any of my daughters or any member of my family. »
At the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), spokesperson Philippe Déry confirmed on Tuesday that the special constables of the paramunicipal organization “were called to intervene with the injured person when the altercation was over”. “We facilitated the care of the victim who was able to be transported to the hospital”, he mentioned, assuring that the STM will collaborate in the police investigation.
