Swelling around the eyes and legs, anemia, headache and occasional vomiting can be early warning signs of chronic kidney disease (CKD), according to a study by experts at King George Medical University in Lucknow, India.

Head of the Department of Nephrology Professor Fischvait Singh said: ‘Chronic kidney disease is difficult to detect in its early stages due to its latent symptoms. “.

The doctor cautioned that if anyone sees swelling in the extremities (especially the eyes and legs), low hemoglobin, headaches and occasional vomiting, they should consult a nephrologist, especially if they also have high blood pressure or diabetes.

Professor Singh added: “If a patient is diagnosed at an early stage, it can be treated with medication.”

Nephrologist Dr Lakshya Kumar said: “The number of CKDs has been on the rise over the years, many people don’t know they have it, and others who do know, only 50 per cent, end up taking their medication. As a result of persistent high blood pressure, the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys are damaged.”

With that, Dr. Kumar added, people can avoid CKD by eating a healthy diet, managing stress and getting regular exercise.

He revealed that low hemoglobin or severe anemia might be due to the kidneys not producing enough erythropoietin.
