If you drink tea, you definitely know that it can have a calming effect that many people appreciate either early in the morning or during the evening, not to mention tea time if you’re British.
There is a wide range of tea options and they are all beneficial for weight loss — and it turns out that green tea may be the best option for people with cancer, says eatthis.
In the study published by JAMA Dermatology, 165 breast cancer patients with an average age of 46 years who were undergoing radiation therapy participated in a blind trial, according to “Sputnik”.
After being divided into two groups, half of the patients were given a placebo while the other half were asked to use a solution containing epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is found in green tea.
The results showed that those who used the EGCG solution were less likely to develop acute radiation-induced dermatitis (RID).
“Green tea extract and its main active ingredient, EGCG, are gaining interest as use increases for radiation-induced damage,” the study authors said.
They added that this is a fascinating study because it clearly demonstrated that the safe and inexpensive intervention (EGCG) reduces common side effects of radiation.
When it comes to how green tea can help cancer patients who may be receiving radiation therapy, Dr. Elaine Albertson said it is “rich in polyphenols that have anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce skin redness, irritation and swelling which are all common side effects of radiation.”
However, Albertson also said, “If you are undergoing chemotherapy you need to be sure to talk to your doctor, as green tea contains substances that may interfere with how chemotherapy drugs work.”
