Al-Marsad Newspaper: A study found that eating 60 grapes a day can help prevent people from getting sunburn.
The results indicated that individuals who ate the fruit daily for two weeks had better protection once morest skin damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, which causes fatal melanomas.
The researchers, led by Professor John Pezzotto, from Western New England University in the US, believe that natural components in grapes, called polyphenols, are responsible for this resistance.
During the study, researchers recruited 29 participants and fed them grape powder equivalent to 2.25 cups of grapes daily for two weeks.
They found that regarding a third of the participants had some resistance to UV light following eating grapes, with one in ten (10%) retaining the beneficial effects four weeks following they stopped eating them.
Participants’ skin responses to UV light before and following eating grapes for two weeks were measured by counting the amount of UV light that caused visible redness 24 hours later.
The team also analyzed the participants’ gut, blood and urine samples. Those who developed resistance to UV light following eating grapes showed significant differences in their microbiome and metabolism compared to non-responders, according to the study, which was published in the journal Antioxidants.
It is known that most cases of skin cancer are caused by ultraviolet radiation coming from the sun, and regarding 90% of skin aging is caused by the sun.
