A study has found the key reason for the loss of smell caused by the new crown

A group of scientists from the Duke University Medical Center in the United States stated that the reason why some people fail to recover their sense of smell following being infected with the new crown is related to the continuous immune attack of olfactory nerve cells and the decrease in the number of related cells. The study found that COVID-19 caused the immune system inside the human nose to experience an abnormally active response. In addition, the number of olfactory sensory neurons decreased, possibly due to the destruction of fragile tissue by persistent inflammation. Encouragingly, the neurons appear to retain some repair capacity even following a long-term immune attack. The researchers hope that modulating abnormal immune responses or repair processes in patients’ noses might help restore at least some sense of smell. The findings have been published in the journal Science Translational Medicine. While focusing on loss of smell, the study also reveals potential causes of other COVID-19 symptoms, including general fatigue, shortness of breath and brain fog, which may Triggered by a similar biological mechanism.
