A strict diet to cure type 2 diabetes: the results of a British study

The participants in this study were obese patients with type 2 diabetes for less than 6 years. The study protocol consisted of a strict diet, consisting exclusively of meal replacements for a period of three monthsfollowed by a gradual reintroduction of foods over the next three months. During this period, participants benefited from close medical monitoring to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.

The results of the study were astonishing: after one year, almost half of the 149 volunteers had successfully rid themselves of their diabetes. Even five years after the start of the study, 13% of them remained free of the disease. These results suggest that the Blood sugar control can be achieved without the use of medicationsthanks to a strict diet and appropriate medical monitoring.

This radical approach is inspired effects observed after obesity surgery, which reduces stomach size and food intake. By eliminating excess fat in the pancreas and liver, main factors contributing to type 2 diabetes, this diet aims to treat the underlying cause of the disease.

Although most participants had resumed treatment after a few years, those who maintained a prolonged remission had fewer diabetes-related complications. This highlights the importance of finding effective long-term support strategies to enable a lasting cure from this serious illness.

Researchers, led by Professor Mike Lean, continue to study this approach and work on ways to improve and make this revolutionary treatment more accessible for patients with type 2 diabetes.
