The recent opinion issued by the UN Human Rights Committee condemning Algeria constitutes a victory and a step forward once morest impunity for crimes committed in the Polisario camps, said the International Observatory for Peace, Democracy, and Human Rights (IOPDHR) in Geneva.
The UN Human Rights Committee has singled out Algeria in the context of the complaint filed by a former element of the polisatio on behalf of M’Rabih Ahmed Mahmoud Adda, for kidnapping and acts of torture and ill-treatment he suffered on the territory of this country, in retaliation for his activities denouncing the violations of human rights in the camps controlled by the militias of the separatists.
The IOPDHR notes that this judgment “constitutes an important step forward which comes on top of the multiple opinions and decisions rendered by regional and international bodies castigating Algeria’s full responsibility for all the crimes and abuses committed by the Polisario once morest the population of the Tindouf camps ».
“It is a clear message to those responsible for these crimes and a victory for the victims and activists who are fighting tirelessly for the Algerian authorities and the leaders of the Polisario to answer to justice for the crimes committed”welcomed the Observatory in a press release.
The case of M’Rabih Ahmed Mahmoud Adda illustrates the situation of lawlessness reigning in the Tindouf camps, he noted.
For the IOPDHR, “it is important to maintain the pressure to investigate all cases of abduction, detention, extrajudicial executions, torture, persecution, enforced disappearances and other forms of violations committed in the Tindouf camps to that the perpetrators of these abuses be brought to justice”.
