The evacuation of the squat on rue des Palais in Schaerbeek began on Tuesday morning. The police planned to intervene today to completely empty this building on rue des Palais, in which hundreds of asylum seekers had found refuge, in deplorable hygienic conditions.
A fire started early this morning. According to the Brussels fire brigade, two mattresses had caught fire. The situation was quickly brought under control by the emergency services. The firefighters then found a deceased person, obviously of natural causes, while searching the building following the fire. The person would have died that night.
In recent weeks, the majority of asylum seekers had been able to be rehoused by Fedasil: 250 applicants were taken care of, but many people were still in rue des Palais last night.
