Sony and Honda have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a new company to build electric cars together.
The new joint venture is scheduled to be established in 2022 and the two companies expect the first EV model to arrive in 2025.
The new company will plan, design, develop and sell electric vehicles, while Honda will supply the manufacturing facilities, and Sony will develop the mobility service platform.
Sony already announced to the world that it’s returning to electric cars at CES 2020 when it showed off the Vision-S concept. It unveiled the Vision-S 02 in January of this year, saying it would establish Sony Mobility Inc in the spring of 2022 to make electric vehicles. This plan now includes Honda.
Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said, “Through this alliance with Honda, which has accumulated extensive global experience and achievements in the automotive industry over many years and continues to revolutionize the field, we intend to build on our vision of ‘making the mobility space emotionally, “and contributes to the evolution of mobility centered around safety, entertainment and adaptability.”
Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe added, “The new company will aim to stand at the forefront of innovation, evolution, and expansion in mobility around the world, with a broad and ambitious approach to creating value that exceeds expectations and imagination. from clients. We will do this by utilizing Honda’s latest technology and know-how regarding environment and safety, while aligning the technology assets of both companies.”
