With its curvilinear backrest, bean-shaped seat front and four cylindrical cherry wood legs, this piece was estimated in May at between 400,000 and 600,000 euros.
“Most likely unique”
80 centimeters high, 205 centimeters long, 110 centimeters deep, the sofa has been reupholstered twice. The original upholstery was yellow Teddy Bear velvet.
“Imagined in 1946 by the artist for his mother’s Parisian apartment, the Polar Bear sofa was offered and integrated into many decorations until Jean Royère ceased activity in 1972”, specifies the Briscadieu house in a communicated. The freshly sold variation, “very probably unique”, was “specially designed for MF Malgat (an entrepreneur, editor’s note) in 1956”, more precisely for the office-library of his Parisian apartment.
