a smartwatch from Samsung for Samsung

It had gone a little unnoticed between the power monsters represented by the Z Fold 5 and the Tab S9. However, when you think about it, the Watch6 Classic perfectly complements the other bent of the Galaxy Unpacked presentation, that of fashion. An aspect represented by the Z Flip 5.

The South Korean manufacturer’s smartwatch therefore comes hand in hand with this desire to provide innovative, original and stylish tech accessories. A guideline respected by the latest version of Samsung thanks to the return of the rotary dial around the screen. It’s out of the ordinary, it gives a certain elegance to the watch while offering comfort of use.

A dial that makes the difference

This bezel (which is far from being a first for Samsung) is a real success on this Galaxy Watch6 Classic. It is solid, pleasant to turn thanks to this sensation of notching, in the continuity of the case (with a separation every 5 minutes just below)… In the end, it is an additional asset to a watch which, in its entirety and in its materials (Gorilla Glass for the screen, stainless steel for the case, sapphire crystal glass, etc.), is successful in its form. Successful bet at this level for Samsung.

On the other hand, as a smartwatch, the Galaxy Watch6 Classic must also meet certain technological feature requirements. It happens this time on the 1.47 inch Oled screen (for the 47mm version that we tested). Here again, there is ultimately not much to complain about. Excellent brightness, always-on display, rather precise health monitoring, good sports companion, fairly intuitive navigation, extensive customization… In short, many qualities ruined by a huge defect: restricted access to those who do not have a Samsung smartphone.

Everything for Samsung

Running on Wear OS, the Watch6 Classic can only be activated (and used) with an Android device. If you have an iPhone, you are therefore automatically excluded. Either way, the competition between the two brands can explain it (and again). What is less understandable is the fact that certain features (such as carrying out an ECG or measuring your blood pressure) are reserved for the South Korean brand’s phones only.

By acting in this way, Samsung is entrenching itself more and more in a closed ecosystem which is reminiscent of what has been done by a certain Apple brand. This should certainly increase in the years to come when we know the interest that the manufacturer has in the interconnectivity of products through its SmartThings application.

Nice but…

This downside tarnishes a watch that is ultimately nice but restricts the freedoms of the user. We would have liked to use it with our iPhone, to have all the data and health analyzes in the same application… To say that this is the only fault would also be to forget other disappointments, such as the somewhat disappointing autonomy. It can hardly last two days, in short you will recharge it daily.

The Watch6 Classic does not revolutionize the Galaxy Watch range. Samsung’s new watch brings some improvements (rotating bezel, longer battery life, better power) without upsetting everything. But to take full advantage of it, you will have to navigate through the Samsung universe and its galaxy of products.
