A small plane with two occupants crashed in southern Costa Rica, while authorities have begun the relevant rescue and investigation efforts.

The Red Cross confirmed to EFE that it received the report of the accident at 11:12 local time (17:12 GMT), which indicated that on the Carate landing strip in Puerto Jiménez, Puntarenas province (south), a small plane had problems and exploded.

“Our first unit arrived at the site a few minutes ago and reported an active fire and what might be charred human remains,” the Red Cross reported.

Official information

According to information from the General Directorate of Civil Aviation, the aircraft left Juan Santamaría Airport, on the outskirts of San José, and was heading to the Sirena airfield, in Corcovado National Park, in the south of the country, a journey lasting approximately one hour.

The aircraft, in which the pilot and co-pilot were travelling, was a Piper Seneca registered TI-API and was owned by a company that operates commercial flights.

Images released by local media show the remains of the aircraft on fire.

Authorities have not confirmed the identities of the victims of the accident.
