If you’ve had a bank card recently, you might have noticed a small indentation on the other side of the chip. Have you ever wondered what it’s for? Here’s the answer.
The tiny notch is barely noticed. The consequences of the notch on the other side of the chip on some bank cards for their users are still unknown.
This is not just an aesthetic detail and far from being a manufacturing defect, it is indeed a deliberate choice by a financial organization founded three years ago. But what is the purpose of this interesting feature? ”This is to help our visually impaired customers in their daily lives, especially when withdrawing money or making payments. In fact, this notch makes it easier to identify the bank card in your wallet. It also distinguishes the direction to insert the card into the payment terminal.”, explains Sylvain Jonckheere, spokesman for ING Belgium.
Visually impaired customers make up about 1% of the population. Will these notched cards become commonplace in the future?
“In any case, the banks that offer this service will replace the old card with a new one and indicate the expiration date. Therefore, in general, we know that the bank’s wallet is completely renewed every five years, so in the future more and more customers will receive cards with a notch.said Febelfin spokesperson Charline Gorez.
Around 3 million customers in Belgium already have such cards.
