A simple mistake in using an air fryer could lead to serious health consequences

England – “Healthy” air fryers have become popular around the world, but neglecting to clean them following use may lead to food poisoning, according to health experts.

Candice Zona Mendola, a food safety specialist, said that cooking food in a dirty air fryer, without cleaning it “between uses,” is associated with a higher risk of exposure to food contamination.

For example, if you cook a piece of chicken contaminated with salmonella, and you do not clean the air fryer before cooking another food, the salmonella might infect another food item. According to the USDA, most salmonella can remain infectious for 32 hours on a dry surface.

Meanwhile, if you don’t clean your air fryer regularly, “old food particles and germs will build up and contaminate the food you put in it,” says Janelyn Hutchings, a certified food safety specialist and food scientist at StateFoodSafety.

“The air fryer should be cleaned following every meal cooked in it,” she added.

“All you have to do is use hot water with a little dishwashing liquid,” Candice explained. Three minutes of your time will keep the pan safe.”

She advised once morest using tools when cleaning the air fryer, as they can remove the non-stick coating. Sanitizer should not be used either, as it is usually not safe for food contact surfaces.

It is noteworthy that air fryers have achieved great popularity because they use hot air instead of hot oil to cook foods, which provides a quick and healthy alternative to regular fryers.
