On March 2, 2022, Jean-Pierre Pernaut, the former presenter of TF1’s 1 p.m., disappeared. His wife Nathalie Marquay-Pernaut published a book entitled “A Sign of You”. Facing Audrey Crespo-Mara in “Sept à Huit” this Sunday, January 14, she returned to her husband’s fight once morest illness and the day of his death, the hardest of his life.
She had watched over him night and day, during the three weeks preceding his death, in March 2022. But Nathalie Marquay-Pernaut was unable to do anything in the face of the illness of her husband, the iconic presenter of TF1’s 1 p.m. . Since then, the former Miss France has ensured that she feels his presence at her side. She confided in a book, A sign from you, published on January 4 by Éditions Trédaniel. But also this Sunday with Audrey Crespo-Mara, in the portrait of the week of “Sept à Huit”, an interview to be found in full above.
However, two years ago, the field of possibilities is still immense. Because when the Covid epidemic arrives in France, Nathalie feels that it is time for her husband to ease up and turn the page on 1 p.m. A first prostate cancer had weakened him, he now had to enjoy life and his family. “Each time, I told him: ‘that would be good, you’re getting old, you should retire, you should take advantage’. And then he said to me: ‘You’re right, I’m starting to get old, to be tired, to be out of breath,’ she says.
He felt like he mightn’t die, that he mightn’t leave me, that it wasn’t possible.

Nathalie Marquay-Pernaut
After having been the face of the TF1 television news for nearly 33 years, Jean-Pierre Pernaut is retiring at the end of 2020. But things are not going to go as planned. “Four or five months later, we were told that Jean-Pierre was suffering fromlung cancer. It was a violent shock, we said to ourselves: ‘it’s not possible'”, remembers Nathalie. Operated for the first time during the summer, a second ax comes to darken the start of the school year. “The other lung was affected by a larger size than the first,” blurts out the former Miss France. “But there, we can’t operate because he has half a lung missing, emphysema, three stents in his heart”she specifies, while ensuring that Jean-Pierre remains combative. “He had the impression that he mightn’t die, that he mightn’t leave me, that it wasn’t possible. He thought a lot regarding his loved ones, all the time, more than regarding himself”she says.
While he is living his last months without knowing it, Jean-Pierre Pernaut is putting on a good show. At the end of 2021, he even chairs the Miss France jury, but he is very weakened. “The breathing was saturated, he had difficulty walking, and he had this strength. It was so beautiful”underlines Nathalie, who admits, with a tear in her eye: “I still haven’t accepted his death.” Other signs worry him: “He mightn’t put words together in a sentence or he said one word for another. He lost his memory a lot,” she explains. So Jean-Pierre ends up having an MRI which reveals something other than cancer:“a first stroke”.
Nathalie Marquay wonders regarding its origin. “In January 2022, he had a pet scan for his lungs and there were no more traces of cancer. However, doctors eventually identified the cause of his stroke: his heart valve was damaged. I find It’s strange because less than a month ago, everything was perfectly fine. So, I have doubts. I wonder if the anti-Covid vaccine and radiotherapy go well together, because, eight days following the third vaccination , he had his first strokes and thromboses following thromboses”she believes, even if she recognizes “that in no case“this is not recognized by medicine.

The thirteenth stroke will be fatal to him. The doctors decide to carry out a new MRI which goes badly. “I will blame myself for this for the rest of my life because it was the only time I didn’t accompany him. There were so many doctors around him, I was just able to kiss his feet,” explains Nathalie. This is the last time she will see him alive, the doctors having plunged Jean-Pierre into an artificial coma to relieve his heart from which he will never wake up.
Since then, Nathalie has been convinced that there is life following death and that her husband’s soul is sending her signs. “I have my proof. For example, at four in the morning my TV turns on. So at first I thought I was lying on the remote, but when I turn it off it turns back on . I’m sure it’s him because it came on on the last channel where he worked, LCI, and I heard a doctor talking regarding the heart. I had to go and unplug the TV.”she smiles, determined to oscillate between these two worlds for a long time. “I don’t want to abandon Jean-Pierre, I want to show him that I’m still here”.
