For the second consecutive weekend, the Brussels ring (R0) will be completely closed to traffic, from Friday evening, towards the capital between the interchange towards Genappe and that of Groenendael. This is the second phase of a major road renewal project that extends from Braine-l’Alleud to the Flemish Region, said Wednesday Sofico, the manager of the Walloon motorway network.
From this Friday at 10:00 p.m., the R0 will be completely closed between the “Genappe” and “Groenendael” interchanges until Monday 04:00 a.m. in order to allow the re-asphalting of the roads. Work will be carried out 24 hours a day.
To reach Brussels, a diversion will be set up from the Haut-Ittre interchange and all the roads converging there (E19/A7, E411/A4, N25, N28, N280, etc.). Users will have to take the West Ring towards Wauthier-Braine. Those who will still travel on the East Ring to reach a local destination will be obliged to leave the ring at exit n°26 “Genappe”.
Last weekend, a hundred men were hard at work night and day to rehabilitate the portion between Waterloo and the regional boundary. Some 4,000 tons of asphalt were removed before being replaced.
In all, three weekends of work, requiring a total closure of traffic to the capital, will be necessary to complete the site.
The total cost of the rehabilitation and security works is estimated at three million euros. Some 36,000 vehicles circulate each day in normal times on the portion of the ring concerned.
