amazing pictures
The Curiosity rover continues its journey and never ceases to amaze scientists. The machine recently photographed unusual objects on Mars. Thanks to the erosion of the Martian soils, a striking sculpture in the shape of a peak drawn in the rock has been unearthed in the crater of Gale. Around mid-May, a photo of a hole in the rock resembling a doorway was sent by Curiosity.
A pareidolia
The image in question obviously does not show a door, but a simple opening dug into the rock. Here, our brain plays tricks on us by trying to associate the image with a known figure. This is pareidolia. The photo reveals a kind of optical illusion that motivates us to find a resemblance to an object.
In a less literal sense, my science team is interested in these rocks as a “door” to the ancient past. As I climb up this mountain, I’m seeing higher levels of clay give way to salty minerals called sulfates – clues as to how water dried up on Mars billions of years ago.
