A scoop of ice cream now costs the same as a liter of Diesel: “Everything is reflected more and more”

The scoop of ice cream now reaches the same price as a liter of Diesel. More and more traveling ice cream parlors are forced to raise their prices, sometimes up to 30%. The rise in raw materials and energy costs them dearly. The only way to sustain their business is to pass these increases on to their customers.

On the road, on tour, Luca had no choice. This traveling ice cream maker has raised the price of its products. From 1.50 euros, the ball goes to 2 euros. An increase of more than 30% but fortunately, he can count on the understanding of his customers. “When it’s good, there’s no problem, so it’s fine. It’s true that it’s annoying but as long as the quality is there, that’s the main thing I think”slips a customer. “Life becomes much more expensive but hey, when you have no choice, there is no choice. It’s true that if we might reduce the price once more, that would be great”said another. “Once in a while, it doesn’t hurt”continues a third.

Its sector is one of the hardest hit by the rise in fuel prices. A shame when the season has just started. “We were doing more or less a full a week, we were at 120 euros. And here, we are on 160 to 170 euros for a full tank”, notes Luca Rulli, traveling artisanal ice cream maker. Especially since he owns 4 vans of this type. The increase is estimated at 800 euros per month. But to keep his clientele, it is impossible to reduce his route or the number of outings. “Everything has increased, deliveries have increased… That’s the whole thing. Everything is reflected more and more. We are reducing our margins more and more too”continues the traveling glacier.

Raw materials on the rise

Vanilla, pistachio, banana… In his workshop, Luca makes his ice cream in an artisanal way. But here too, the prices of the raw material are constantly climbing. “Milk, in 2020, it was at 0.54 euros per liter and it has just risen to 0.96 euros per litre. We also have the 35% cream which has just increased as well. I don’t know exactly the price but it just went up a lot. And sugar too, very big increase…”he explains.

At 25, this passionate young independent continues to fight and is counting on a sunny summer to sell as many ice creams as possible. Otherwise, he will have to stop his activity…
