A Saudi media woman raises controversy by tweeting about the “Battle of Poitiers” after Morocco lost to France, and a Qatari Sheikha responds

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The Saudi media, Iman Al-Hamoud, sparked an interaction between activists on social media following a tweet she published commenting on the Moroccan national team’s loss from its French counterpart in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Al-Hamoud said in her tweet: “The Conquest of Andalusia group.. We await your projections on the ‘Battle of Poitiers’ yesterday.. Here is history repeating itself.. Isn’t it? Or have your tongues been swallowed by birds? How small are your minds to mix religion and history with a noble game like football!! “.

For her part, the Qatari Sheikha, Maryam Al Thani, responded to Al-Hamoud with a tweet in which she said: “Since you wrote the tweet in Arabic, the ‘Battle of Poitiers’ is called the ‘Martyrs’ Court’… With conclusive evidence, these are the ones who brought religion and politics into the ‘noble game’.”

For his part, Abd al-Rahman bin Saud commented on a tweet in which he said: “Our sister, Iman, is an immigrant in France and thinks she is French… The Battle of Poitiers is called the ‘martyrs’ court’ in Ghoug?” The proximity of one of your most famous cities.. to violate your land and honour, under the pretext of “evangelism”.. Will you call the battle the name of the “martyrs’ court”?!

It is noteworthy that Al-Hamoud previously sparked controversy and interaction among social media activists in Saudi Arabia in 2019 following she was invited by the Misk Charitable Foundation to attend the UNESCO evening, which prompted the head of the Misk Initiatives Center and the director of the private office of the Saudi Crown Prince, Badr Al-Asaker, to publish a tweet in which he expressed He apologized for what happened, describing it as an “individual error”.
