MUNICIPAL LIFE. The municipality has decided to give the name of Maurice and Jackson Chanet to the street that will serve the future Carpières subdivision. The City is thus honoring two of its greatest champions.
“They both made Saint-Dizier shine. During the June 30 municipal council meeting, it was with this simple explanation that Quentin Brière justified his choice to name a new street in Saint-Dizier following Maurice and Jackson Chanet. “An honor”, for the one who became European boxing champion in 1990. “I never thought that one day there would be a street in my name in Saint-Dizier”, is still surprised Maurice Chanel.
“That we are both, it’s even more fun”
His name, but also that of his son Jackson, also European boxing champion. It was in 2005. “That we are both, it’s even more fun,” adds the one who first thought it was a bad joke. “When the City called me, I thought it was a joke. But no… I had arm hair that stood up! It’s a real surprise for me, for my wife, for my children. It’s amazing ! »
“Very close to Marcel-Thil and Roger-Michelot streets”
If the plaque will only be placed in a few months, the choice of the Carpières subdivision is perfectly suited to the boxer. “It’s very close to Marcel-Thil and Roger-Michelot streets”, notes the former champion, proud to be associated with his two other big names in Bragarde boxing. Because if the Chanet family is from Châteauvillain, where a gymnasium bears the name of the two champions since 2001, Maurice Chanet has been living in Saint-Dizier, in the boxing world, for more than 50 years.
“I started boxing at 16 and I never left the ring,” underlines Maurice Chanet, evoking his victory in 1990, with a touch of nostalgia. “At the time, it was more complicated to have a title. It took several fights to get there. Today, only one and it’s done… When we had a title, it meant something…”
President of the Pugilistic Circle of Saint-Dizier for more than 20 years, Maurice Chanet continues to bring Bragarde boxing to life. “When we organize a fight, people know that we are doing something good. That there is above all the love of boxing. This is undoubtedly why many boxing fans were demanding that something be done in Saint-Dizier in honor of Maurice and Jackson Chanet. This is their wish granted.
