A ‘ring of fire’ solar eclipse is coming soon: what you need to know

On Saturday October 14, millions of people will have the opportunity to observe a “ring of fire”, a particularly impressive and infrequent eclipse.

An extremely rare phenomenon visible to the eyes of several million lucky people. A solar eclipse will appear in the sky on October 14. A rather special eclipse since it will have the shape of a “ring of fire”.

What is a “ring of fire”?

First of all, it is important to differentiate between lunar eclipses and solar eclipses. Unlike a lunar eclipse which occurs when the Moon obscures the Sun, a solar eclipse occurs when the lunar body is placed in the Earth’s shadow.

In the case of this ring-of-fire solar eclipse, the Moon will be extremely far from Earth, which will prevent it from completely obscuring the Sun. Instead of being completely hidden, the sun’s light rays will envelop the Moon’s shadow, creating this “ring of fire.”

Several million lucky people will be able to observe the solar eclipse in the form of a “ring of fire” with their own eyes. As indicated by NASA, this eclipse will be visible in several American states: Oregon, California, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Nevada and Arizona.

The eclipse will then continue its path towards South America, crossing Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Panama and Colombia before disappearing near Brazil.

For the most curious, it will be possible to follow the evolution of this “ring of fire” thanks to a video broadcast from NASA from 5:30 p.m. on the website of the American federal space agency. The ring, which will be visible for a few minutes, can be observed on the Internet from several points of view across different cities in the United States, NASA said.
