An annular eclipse during which the sun appears as a ring of fire in the sky will occur Saturday in the skies of the Western United States, Latin America and northern South America.
This type of eclipse is observable when the Moon passes in front of the Sun, but without being able to occult it entirely. This is a phenomenon that can be admired over a narrow strip of territory.
On October 14, the ring of fire will first appear above the Pacific, 1,600 km off the coast of Vancouver, before becoming observable on the continent in Oregon.
The show can then be observed in Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Texas, then in Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia and, finally, in Brazil, listed the planetarium of Montreal on the Space for Life website.
The eclipse will last a maximum of 5 min 17 sec in Nicaragua. At this time, just over 90% of the sun will be obscured by the Moon, leaving only a fiery corona in the sky.
Better than nothing
Quebecers will not be left out, however. If they cannot observe the annular eclipse, they will be entitled to a partial eclipse, more or less between noon and 2:30 p.m., depending on where they live.
The inhabitants of Outaouais and Abitibi-Témiscamingue will be the most spoiled since they will see up to 20% of the sun disappear behind the Moon. In Montreal, 17.1% of the sun will be obscured during the peak of the astronomical phenomenon, at 1:17 p.m.
Space for life has also put online a complete list of cities in Quebecwith observation times and the percentage of the sun that will be obscured.
Note that you should never look directly at the Sun without appropriate protective glasses, NASA reminded in view of Saturday’s eclipse.
The last annular eclipse took place on June 10, 2021. The highlight of the show, however, was observed by very few Earthlings since the ring of fire appeared in northern Canada and crossed the North Pole to end in Siberia.
The next annular eclipse will take place next year, on October 2. However, you will need a boat or live on the southern tip of South America to observe it since it will shine mainly in the Pacific Ocean.
Otherwise, Quebecers will be able to recover with a total eclipse which will take place on April 8 and will be visible in several places in Quebec, including Montreal.
