A rickshaw driver’s protest against the heavy electricity bill? – Pakistan

Old photos of a rickshaw driver in Pakistan are going viral once more on social media, which was exposed in a public place. The images are accompanied by false claims that the rickshaw driver stripped off his clothes in protest following a hefty ‘electricity bill’ in July 2024.

It should be noted that the government has increased the electricity prices extraordinarily to get the bailout package from the IMF and in this background the old photos of the rickshaw driver are also going viral with false claims.

In fact, these photos are from 2017 when a rickshaw driver took the extreme step of dispersing a protest of people on the main road by walking naked on the road. Traffic was paralyzed due to this protest.

The photo was shared more than 800 times. A photo shared on X on July 4, 2024 was captioned as “Poor rickshaw driver stripped off his clothes in public in protest when he got a huge electricity bill”.

Published in December 2017, the photo was accompanied by the caption, “Naked man in Faisalabad teaches Pakistanis how to stop protests with strange trick”, the man “removed all his clothes at a busy square in Faisalabad, Punjab”. Dozens of protesters were chased away.”

Till July 11, there were no reports of naked protests once morest the rising cost of electricity.
