The OCR (Obsessive Compulsive Relational Disorder), a disorder less known than other forms of OCDcan endanger relationships by inciting individuals to questioning their partnership or obsessing over their partner’s perceived flaws. The application, tested on 103 heterosexual couples, appears to offer a glimmer of hope by protecting once morest worsening symptoms during periods of stress.

Do you have OCR? According to psychologists, this little-known disorder might ruin your relationship without you knowing it. People suffering from relational OCD criticize their relationship or partner. A team of researchers believes that a mobile application can alleviate this disorder. Obsessive hand washing, checking that doors are locked, and hoarding are well-known symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. But according to psychologists, a specific, but lesser-known, form of OCD might be derailing your relationship.

People suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Relationship Disorder (OCD) can tear their own marriage apart or obsess over their partner’s perceived flaws. However, a team of Israeli researchers now believe that a simple mobile application can alleviate the symptoms of this disorder. According to the researchers, Healthy romantic relationships can improve mental and physical health, well-being and self-esteem. However, people with OCR may have difficulty maintaining one. They often worry regarding whether they are in the “good” relationship, the intensity of their feelings towards their partner and what the latter thinks of them.

Furthermore, people with OCR may suffer from doubts and concerns regarding their partner’s perceived flaws, such as their appearance and intelligence. In this case, sufferers are preoccupied with thoughts such as whether their partner is quite funny, by images such as that of their partner who is not attractive, and by desires, in particular that of leaving their partner.

As with other forms of OCD, these intrusive experiences are “unwanted and often unexpected”, specify the researchers. Symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder have been linked to low sexual satisfaction, low level of commitment, insecure attachment and excessive jealousy, specifies the team.

How to do ?

Cognitive behavioral therapy – a type of talking therapy – is the main treatment. However, researchers at Reichman University in Israel investigated whether a phone app might offer protection once morest OCR symptoms. They recruited 103 heterosexual couples, with an average age of 26 years. Half of them were asked to use the app daily. The application consists of browse behaviors associated with TOCRlike profiles on a dating application, and classify them as good or bad.

For example, the application displays a sentence such as “doubts regarding my partner will destroy me”, which should be dragged upwards, as if the thought were “thrown away”, explained the researchers. Another statement, “I am able to put aside my doubts regarding my relationship”must be slid downwards, as if “embraced” the concept.

Participants were surveyed regarding their relationship and sexual satisfaction, the prevalence of OCD and OCD symptoms, and their mental health at the start of the study, following using the app, and one month later.

The results show that those who do not have not used the app saw their OCD and TOCR scores increase, while those who used the app “reported no such increase.” The researchers said the app “was not associated with a reduction in symptoms, but it rather protected once morest the increase in symptoms observed in the control group” (source 1).

According to them, these results might be explained by the fact that people who did not use the application adopted TOCR-type behaviors during periods of stress. On the other hand, those who have used the application are now better at even control TOCR behaviors in times of stress.
