En announcing in December 2021 the holding of the inaugural evening of the 2024 Summer Olympics on the Seine, in the center of Paristhe organizers of the event had of course ticked all the boxes for a historic event and an unprecedented moment of celebration in the chosen configuration, marking a clear break with the classic Ceremonies thought of in a stadium.

They had also been able to realize – at least in part – challenges posed by such an operation which, until now and taking into account the gauge then established at 600,000 spectators, has never been achieved by any Olympic City in the past.

Nevertheless, just over 430 days before the Opening Ceremony scheduled for July 26, 2024, the Organizing Committee and the public authorities have decided to review the general copy and this, in order to reduce the airfoil to best meet the requirements of security and control of the flow of spectatorsparticularly on the sensitive issue of transport.

Thus, 100,000 spectators should be able to take part in the event from the lower platforms, in other words, at the level of the stands which will be specially arranged for the occasion in a paying configuration, for an access ticket between 250 and 2,700 euros per seatnot counting the services offered as part of of the packages exclusive hospitality packages of up to 9,500 euros (excluding taxes), especially for companies and their guests.

At the same time, and according to the Minister of Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, interviewed this Sunday, May 21, 2023 during the show “Political Issues” on France Inter, France Info et The worldthe gauge for the high platforms should be between 300,000 and 400,000 spectators.

If the device still needs to be refined and clarified, the spectators who will thus have free access to the Ceremony should be distributed on both sides of the Seine, between the starting point of the river parade, at the level of the Pont d’Austerlitz, and the arrival point located opposite the Eiffel Tower (7th), at the level of the Jardins du Trocadéro (16th).

This Tuesday, May 23, 2023 should in any case make it possible to better understand the future evening.

The aforementioned Minister, her counterpart for the Interior and Overseas Territories, Gérald Darmanin, as well as the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, and the President of the OCOG, Tony Estanguet, will indeed meet in the morning to co-sign a security protocol dedicated to an exceptional Opening Ceremony designed over a six-kilometre course.

This will in fact bring together a large part of the 10,500 athletes expected who will then parade on 116 boats chartered by 42 river companiesa large contingent of officials from all over the world, hundreds of thousands of spectators, all under the gaze of several billion viewers.

To ensure the safety of this show unprecedented, tens of thousands of police and gendarmes will also be mobilized, not to mention the support of emergency services and private security personneland perhaps also a logistical reinforcement of the army.

It will indeed be a question of being able to cover the route along the Seine, on the river and at the level of the low quays and the high quays, with the crossing of the bridges as so many obstacles and potential risks, with in addition the concern to secure the technical means – 80 giant screens among other installations – which will be deployed to allow a large-scale celebration.

A sign of the importance of the system, some 50 working meetings were held prior to the formalization of the framework of the Opening Ceremony in 2021, with the assistance of the OCOG of course, but also of all the associated bodies. , be it the International Olympic Committee (IOC) of course, the City of Paris, the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF), State services – in particular the Police Headquarters – and the broadcasters of the event.

Since then, meetings have multiplied to sanctify the concept and make it both flamboyant and spectacular, but just as reasonable. A general rehearsal has also been planned for the course of the summer of 2023. A way to gauge the critical elements and to continue the work on the optimal framing of the Ceremony.

Be that as it may, the security protocol which will be co-signed on Tuesday should inevitably come to formalize certain key points and give a little more the measure of the challenge desired and assumed by the organizers of the Games and the French authorities.
