In the more recent SPÖ history, the May Day celebrations are associated with a catcall for the then Federal Chancellor and party leader Werner Faymann. That was in 2016 and marked the beginning of the end of the Faymann era.
That was the tenor of many comrades at the time that something like this should never happen once more on May 1st. But this year there is another May 1st without red unity. The member survey for the selection of the new party chairman overshadows the highest red holiday, Labor Day.
Party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner will of course speak at the SPÖ’s largest May celebration, the one on Vienna’s Rathausplatz. From nine o’clock in the morning the delegations from the districts will march in there. On stage with Rendi-Wagner are, among others, the Mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, who will traditionally also give a speech, as well as the President of the Austrian Trade Union Federation, Wolfgang Katzian.

In addition to Rendi-Wagner, their opponents for the party chairmanship on May 1st are also in action: Burgenland’s governor Hans Peter Doskozil is on the road in his state, including at the main celebration in Kobersdorf in central Burgenland.
Andreas Babler has several May Day appointments in Lower Austria: In the morning he will hold the speech at the celebration in Krems-Lerchenfeld. At noon, Babeler will perform in his hometown of Traiskirchen, where he is mayor. In the followingnoon, Babler is the keynote speaker at the Labor Day celebration in Gerasdorf near Vienna (Korneuburg district).
In Upper Austria, SPÖ regional chief Provincial Councilor Michael Lindner will switch to Steyr this year for the May Day celebrations, because on the main square in Linz, next to Mayor Klaus Luger, Upper Austria’s AK President Andreas Stangl will speak – the biggest May celebration in Linz is traditionally in Year before a Chamber of Labor election stage for the respective AK President.
