A prominent priest from Lazdija region, who fought for the freedom of Lithuania, died

Vilma Danauskienė, a member of the Lazdijai district council, shared the news about the clergyman’s death on Facebook.

Dean of Lazdija Nerijus Žvirblys 15min confirmed this news on Tuesday.

“And old age and diseases – everything came together,” said the priest.

According to him, recently G. Dovidaitis has not been actively involved in the priesthood – he was an altar boy, but as much as he could, he carried out a holy mission.

“Until recently, he used to come to listen to confessions, but now the disease has become more active, he had to stay in the hospital (…) This is a great loss for the Lazdija region. He was here for many years, a former dean, everyone knows him, everyone knows him”, said N. Žvirblys.

He recalled his colleague’s contribution to Lithuania’s independence.

“He took part in the edition of the chronicle, he helped something, he helped, he is connected with those things,” said the clergyman.

G. Dovidaitis was born in 1935 and was ordained a priest in 1964.

During the Soviet era, he contributed to publishing the chronicle of the Lithuanian Catholic Church, actively participated in the meetings of the underground Catholic Committee for the Protection of the Rights of Believers, when priests Alfonsas Svarinskas and Sigitas Tamkevičius were arrested in 1983.
