TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Prominent Iranian film director Dariush Mehrjui and his wife were stabbed to death in their home by an unknown assailant, state media reported Sunday.

Mehrjhi and his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, were found dead with stab wounds to the neck, Hossein Fazeli, a judicial official, told the official IRNA news agency.

The filmmaker’s daughter, Mona Mehrjui, found the bodies when she went to visit her father Saturday night at his home in a suburb regarding 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of the capital, Tehran.

Authorities were investigating, according to the report, which did not mention speculation regarding a motive, although the woman had reported a knife threat on social media in recent weeks.

Mehrjui, 83, was known as a co-founder of the new wave of Iranian cinema in the early 1970s, focused primarily on realism. He received many awards, such as a Silver Hugo from the Chicago International Film Festival in 1998 and a Golden Shell at the 1993 San Sebastián International Film Festival.

Mehrjui studied in the film program at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the early 1960s.
