A plane leaving from the Ezeiza airport heading to Miami, United States, was struck by lightning while taking off and had to make an emergency landing once more in Buenos Aires. The situation was brought under control and no injuries were reported.
The incident occurred at 11:58 p.m. on December 24, when flight AA908 of the Boeing 787 plane of the North American company American Airlines began its journey to that country, in the middle of a strong electrical storm.
Minutes later, when lightning struck the plane’s wing, the pilots activated an emergency protocol and returned to the international air terminal.

A spokesperson for the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) reported on the incident and explained: “At 11:58 p.m. an emergency was declared and it returned to Ezeiza to be able to land because it was struck by lightning at the time of takeoff.”
Regarding what happened, he explained: “It took off, dumped fuel so as not to exceed the maximum landing weight and landed back in Ezeiza. All emergency procedures established by the airport were triggered, such as firefighters, aeronautical security and the ground control service that coordinates with ground operations.”

The National Civil Aviation Administration had to intervene in the operation from ground control and aeronautical safety, which confirmed that it was safe for the plane to descend.
In this way, the aircraft landed 33 minutes following taking off from Buenos Aires and is still being reviewed to see its condition and confirm whether it may suffer an event of these characteristics in the future.
“The decisions made by the plane crew, by the ground control professionals plus the air traffic controllers meant that the emergency was resolved successfully and without incident,” ANAC stated.
