The collapse of the Chirajara bridge at kilometer 64 of the road that leads from Bogotá to Villavicencio shocked the country at the beginning of 2018. Nine people died and eight were seriously injured. Although several of them were referred to hospitals close to the accident area, the majority moved to the new clinic from the Palermo neighborhood in Bogotá, where they finally recovered. “Fortunately those who got here made it through, with many medical difficulties, but they made it. These patients presented fractures of the lower extremities, which accompanied severe vascular lesions”, assured Rodrigo Ignacio Quijano, general director of the institution. The new clinices nationally recognized for its emphasis and research in neurosciences and for his advances in complex spinal surgeries to correct scoliosis, herniated disc, narrow cervical canal, radiculopathies and complex fractures.

One of the most complex procedures is the correction of spinal deviation. “The surgery is called 360 degree scoliosis. The entire spine is grasped and completely straightened. Of course, the process is subject to tests that determine the viability of the treatment,” explained the director of the clinic and specified that since these are highly complex surgeries, with the possibility of risk up to a year following the operation, all Candidates must be referred by insurers. “Not all patients are suitable for surgery, therefore, they must first go through a filter and must be reviewed by a specialist.”, he clarified.

According to the report Global Burden of Disease (GBD), conducted by the World Bank in 2019, approximately 1.71 billion people worldwide live with musculoskeletal conditions that affect joints, bones, muscles, and multiple areas or systems of the body. That same study showed that low back pain is the main symptom in patients suffering from any of these ailments.

This institution also specializes in high-level orthopedic management, plastic surgery, invasive cardiovascular diagnosis, and complex trauma. Likewise, “severe facial traumas caused by occupational or mobility accidents are increasing, and in the Clinic They are attended by highly experienced professionals in new technologies for the reconstruction of severe facial fractures. In the same way, through digital tools our maxillofacial surgery team reconstructs fractures in three dimensions and by means of 3D printing the image is printed, not only of the bones already operated virtually, but also the material that we are going to use to fix these fractures. With the above, we provide greater intraoperative safety, more confidence to the patient and more predictable results. The current health system allows these procedures to be carried out, without generating additional costs for the patient”, explained the director.

On the other hand, the changes, remodeling and restructuring have allowed the clinic, in terms of sustainability, to become established. In addition, it has the plus of being in the central area of the city, which easily welcomes users from all sectors of Bogotá and La Sabana.

For this reason, the care offered by the new clinic, which is currently equipped with 96 beds, including 13 intermediate care and 15 intensive care, five operating rooms and two procedure rooms. “We have excellent epidemiological, patient safety, infection control, and satisfaction indicators. In addition, we offer psychosocial accompaniment, thus giving comprehensive care, a characteristic that we achieve by belonging to a missionary congregational work. We are a small clinic, with extensive coverage in important areas and we have the capacity to continue adapting to the new challenges posed by the health system in Colombia”, concluded Dr. Quijano.
