A Peugeot e-208 at €5 a day: can we believe it?

Peugeot has just launched an “exceptional” rental offer: the e-208 at €150 per month. Is there an eel under battery ?

Faced with soaring fuel prices, Peugeot decided “to make accessible to as many people as possible the favorite electric car of the French”, the e-208which has indeed been the best-selling connected car during the 1st half of 2022. The long-term rental offer is €150 per month “only”, which gives €5 per day, a price that Dacia puts in ahead for the Sandero Stepway!

This is interesting, because with the e-208, according to our recharge cost simulator, a full tank costs an average of €8. With a 100% battery, the WLTP range is 362 km. That’s regarding €2.20 to cover 100 km. In comparison, the PureTech 75 hp gasoline is announced at 5.3 liters per 100 km, or around €10 for unleaded.

Another good point of the offer: it certainly concerns the basic finish with the electric motor, the Active, but the equipment is not basic for all that: there is air conditioning, the 7-inch touch screen , the automatic switching on of the lights or the electric mirrors.

But where is the bad surprise then? Already in the intake. There is a first rent of €10,500. Do not panic, this is largely covered by the bonus of €6,000. At least the bonus is granted to all French people. Because for the first “final” rent of €2,000 put forward by Peugeot, there is also the taking into account of the scrapping bonus, in the amount of €2,500.

Certainly, there too, for the purchase of an electric, no condition of income. But you have to have the vehicle to scrap, the offer being reserved for those who have access to the bonus. As a reminder, it must be a gasoline from before 2006 or a diesel from before 2011.

It’s finish ? Not really. The rental offer, for only 24 months, takes into account 500 km per month. According to Peugeot, this is a mileage that corresponds to most city car users. In the year, that gives 6,000 km. It’s a bit limited for a versatile city car, destined to get out of town more than an electric Twingo. The extra kilometer will be 7 cents, so 7 € for 100 km.

The offer will ultimately be very interesting if you are a modest household for the scrapping bonus: in this case, it is €5,000, so there is no contribution, and even a “gift” of €500 . There, we have an e-208 at 150 € per month, for 500 km.
