A resident lost her life in the fire which broke out on Wednesday evening in the nursing home located rue Jean-Baptiste Desmeth in Evere, the Brussels firefighters confirmed on Thursday. 17 other people were affected by the smoke. Fifteen of them were able to be treated on the spot via an advanced medical post, the other two having been taken to hospital. “It is a member of staff and an inspector of the Brussels North local police”adds the spokesperson for the fire department.
The emergency services were alerted around 8:30 p.m. The fire broke out in a room on the second floor of the building. Due to the release of smoke, the third and fourth floors were partially evacuated. Only people who had breathed in smoke or were distressed were evacuated, according to fire department spokesman Walter Derieuw. “The other residents were able to stay in their rooms with the windows open.”
